Jason began his career in 1991 at Bankers Trust. He still recalls the head of trading’s first words to him. He said "Jason, you've made it to this side of the revolving door. The hardest part is staying here."
That was his introduction to trading. You either make money or you move on.
The markets have been a big part of his life ever since.
Jason credits BT as being a cornerstone of his career. He got to learn from some of the best traders in the business, and became a leading trader himself. Jason left BT in 1999 after the merger with Deutsche Bank. He calls the merger his “golden opportunity” and has been his own boss ever since.
Since leaving BT, Jason has co-founded a leading stock advisory business, a listed investment fund, and a successful algorithmic newsletter service. He also trades his own systems. His personal share portfolio has comfortably outpaced the All Ordinaries over the last five years.
Jason's service (which he uses himself) isn't for short term traders, and it isn't for people who like to buy and hold. Jason describes the style as “active investing”. He says it’s about targeting big up-trends that could last for one or two years. But at the same time, being prepared to sell a stock that isn’t performing.
A key feature of the service is that it uses algorithms to analyse the market. This means it can cover practically every ASX stock. It analyses the big “household name” stocks, as well as the ones that few people know about. Many of the best stocks are the ones that people don't know about, yet.
Jason says the biggest problem for many people is deciding when to sell. Either they have a profit and aren’t sure when to cash-out, or a trade is losing money and they don’t know when to exit. Jason says the key is to learn a method for consistently setting exit levels. This helps remove emotion and creates a repeatable process. Jason says that getting this right was his "career make".
